Orthodontic injuries are rare with modern technology used in appliances like braces, retainers, and dental trays. However, accidents such as sudden trips or falls, auto accidents, or sports injuries can still lead to injuries that require emergency dental care and orthodontic repair.

What is an Orthodontic Emergency?

The following symptoms may indicate an acute injury or infection that requires immediate attention:

  • Sudden redness or swelling in the mouth area

  • Intense pain in the oral or facial area

  • Trauma or injury to the teeth, mouth, or face

At Desert Pearl Dentistry, we have the experience to help you manage dental trauma, including orthodontic injuries. Contact us immediately to determine whether you need to visit the dentist or if a hospital emergency visit would be more appropriate for your situation.

Non-Emergency Orthodontic Issues

Not all unexpected discomfort or issues with orthodontic appliances constitute an emergency. Here are a few examples of non-emergency orthodontic problems:

Loose or Broken Orthodontic Equipment

This includes brackets, bands, or wires from your braces. Try to come in as soon as possible for repairs. If necessary, cover the affected area with orthodontic wax to avoid abrasions. If a piece has come off completely, place it in a safe container and bring it with you to your next appointment.

Missing or Poking Pieces

If a wire or bracket is poking or missing, try using a Q-tip or soft tool to move the wire back into place, or use tweezers to reposition the bracket or tie. If you’re unable to do so or are unsure, don’t hesitate to contact us for assistance.

Loose Components or General Pain

Some mild discomfort is common with new orthodontic appliances or after adjustments. If your braces cause irritation, try eating soft foods, taking over-the-counter pain medication (such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen), rinsing with mild saltwater, or using a warm washcloth or heating pad against the jaw to relieve discomfort.
