Palate repair, also known as cleft palate repair, is a surgical procedure designed to correct a birth defect of the palate. The primary goal of this surgery is to close the gap in the palate, allowing the teeth and facial bones to develop normally. Palate repair surgery is typically performed between the ages of 9 to 18 months and often involves a team of specialists, including an oral surgeon, pediatric dentist, orthodontist, and plastic surgeon.

Palate repair surgery involves closing a cleft gap to ensure proper mouth development

What Does Palate Repair Involve?

Palate repair surgery is a complex procedure requiring detailed planning and precision. At Desert Pearl Dentistry, our team works closely with experienced specialists to ensure the best possible outcome. Before the surgery, we evaluate the extent of the cleft and assess any other medical conditions that may be present. The earlier the surgery, ideally starting as early as six weeks old, the better the chances for proper mouth development.

During the surgery, the child will be under general anesthesia or sedation. The surgeon makes incisions on either side of the cleft and brings the tissue together to close the gap. In some cases, tissue from other areas of the body, such as the roof of the mouth, may be used to assist in the repair and create a functional palate.

Follow-up care after cleft palate surgery ensures proper healing and development

After Cleft Palate Surgery

After the procedure, regular follow-up visits to Desert Pearl Dentistry are essential for monitoring recovery. Your child may require additional treatments, such as speech therapy, orthodontic care, or bone grafts to ensure proper development. Our team will provide consistent care and guidance as your child’s mouth continues to grow.

If you’re considering palate repair surgery for your child, it’s important to have a comprehensive treatment plan. Our experienced team at Desert Pearl Dentistry is here to walk you through the entire process, from pre-surgery evaluation to post-surgical care. By working with us, your child can overcome the challenges of a cleft palate and enjoy a healthy, happy life.
